The police car did not have its lights on. According to police, the officer behind the wheel was following an ambulance to the scene of a disturbance. The ambulance did have its lights and sirens on. The speed limit on the road where the accident occurred is 35 miles an hour. Police have not publicly said how fast the car was going when the accident occurred, although a witness said it was speeding.

Tragically, distracted driving is the number one killer of American teens, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The promoters of the ad campaign are hoping it will have the same impact on behavior as prior campaigns which targeted seat belt use and preventing drunk driving. Texting is now becoming as much of a problem as drunk driving – research has shown that texting can delay a driver’s reactions as much as having a blood alcohol concentration of .08 percent, which is the legal limit.

One of the students lost control of her Lexus while she was passing a slower vehicle at a high rate of speed. The Lexus ran into the center median and hit a tree.
